Thankfulness Challenge - Anticipation

My attempts to grow amaryllis last year were disasterous. If you are tempted to buy a discounted amaryllis bulb in January after spotting it listing forlornly on a clearance shelf wedged between a battle scarred Christmas elf and a cheap bikini, just keep walking. You cannot save it. Let it die in peace.

But this year I started early and put the bulbs in a much larger pot than the one I used previously and it seems to be working. I like to think the extra soil is keeping them a bit warmer. Considering these bulbs are tropicals, maybe I should sprinkle a little sand around their base and play some steel guitar music for effect. :o)

Today I am thankful for the excitement of anticipation.

The amaryllis flowers will be pink and white.

  1. The buds are looking really good! I love it when two buds come from one bulb. Good luck with it! Hope to meet you in May!

  2. Put mine out 3 weeks ago. Not to happy with current results. Looks like they will miss the holiday season if they arrive at all. Last year I put one in the refrig. during dormancy, that seemed to help when I replanted.

  4. No stress. I love when these darn things start to shoot up. I keep them in a brown bag after I'm done with them and throw them in the fridge. I even put one in the ground here in Tucson and it did well all year round. The discount bulbs are okay, but I check them in the box first before purchasing. These are one of my favorite bulbs to grow here. I hope it flowers this for you. Good luck!!

  8. I admit, I tend to be a plant rescuer, but this healthy specimen is looking great. Still, I agree with you; a little guitar music couldn't hurt!

  10. Funny. The sand and the guitar, might give it some incentive.

  12. I never seem to get mine to bloom for the holidays, either too early or late. But the anticipation factor is always there. I hope you post a photo of yours when it is in bloom!

  13. For a fact, the steel guitar music will help your tropical amaryllis bloom. You might put on a cheap bikini too while playing the island tunes, but please do not post pictures.

  14. I've actually rescued some of those amaryllis in the past, giving TLC for a year before they bloom. But Oh, those bulbs grow during their summer stay outdoors in a shady spot! :-) Your plants will be beautiful - and I look forward to future posts!

  15. My mom can somehow save those things, and dead looking orchids too. Your picture makes your pot look like the size of a kitchen table!! (which would be very very cool, if not very practical)

  16. I love the anticipation of an amaryllis. A couple years ago I took a photo of mine each day. It was amazing to look at the photos later to see their fast growth.
