Meet TS and Come See the Rest of the Garden...

Dahling, you're beet-utiful!

I have a small confession: I am obsessed with the weather and pray on an almost daily basis for rain. I'm pretty sure God is screening my calls. Virginia for the past several weeks has been hot hot hot and dry dry dry. By tomorrow by last rain barrel will be empty and as I write this expensive city water is hooked up to the aquatic IV's that keep my garden alive.

If you're reading this in Texas or any other mid-western states that are enduring a heinous drought of epic proportions, I'm just glad my computer doesn't have an app that allows you to mercilessly slap me silly or hands would sprout from my computer screen like suckers on a tomato plant.

Tap tap tap.... The monitor seems solid. Whew! I'm relieved!!

Anyway, back to the beets. They were getting more expensive by the minute as I poured city water over their leafy green tops, so I pulled them up.  A salad of steamed beets, nectarines and goat cheese is on the menu for dinner.

I grew these Chiggia beets in a pot on my patio, which explains my puny harvest.

  1. Szkoda, ze deszczu nie da się przesłać na blogu, bo u nas go za dużo. Pozdrawiam

  2. oh no, not puny, wonderful! Beets get too woody when they're large. I think these are the perfect size. Nothing better than steamed beet tops or fresh sliced beet on a salad, yummy!

  3. That's a most excellent harvest! Beets hate me. Chiogga's are so pretty inside. Their greens are yummy too. I actually grow beets more for the greens, and since the roots hate me, that's probably a good thing.

  4. The poor Rose of Sharon. I hope you get some of the rain we just got a couple of days ago. It helped immensely. All the plants seemed to smile.

  5. This is such a year of extremes in weather. We have so much rain that last week a county north of here declared itself an agricultural disaster area because of the water laying in the fields. This after 11 years of drought. Go figure! I hope next year is more temperate for all of us. :)

BTW your meal sounds heavenly - enjoy!

  6. I feel your pain! I think your harvest is great. I haven't developed a taste for beets but your menu does sound delicious! Fingers crossed for RAIN!!!

  7. I have beet envy. The really are "beet-utiful"! Mine didn't do anything, when withered in the heat and dryness.

Those beets look gigantic to me! Your should see the tiny ones that I have in my little plot. I put them in the most shaded of my beds and they have failed to prosper. Even the rabbits seems to have turned their noses up at them! I like the idea of serving beets with nectarines and goat cheese. That sounds delicious!
P.S. I am putting in a call to God on your behalf. He isn't expecting my plea to send a little rain your way, so he won't know to screen my call!

  10. Oh, no, no slaps from me! You've endured my incessant whining; it's the least I can do to listen to yours! Your beets are wonderful...mine never grew - the rabbits kept eating them. Enjoy your salad - it sounds delicious!

  11. Everybody - The beets were tasty, tender, and mottled pink and white, which was cool. I sowed the beets when it was cool and then just watered them a lot.

To forget about how hot and dry it's been, I went to a brunch in DC featuring drag queens as entertainment. Naughty but fun fun fun!!!!

  12. I bought a bunch of Chicago beets at a market last week. I hated them as a child but hoped my palette had matured. I cut off the tops (for salad), scrubbed the roots, brushed them with butter and EVOO, salt & pepper, wrapped them in foil and lovingly roasted them until tender on the grill along with chicken. When done, I portioned the chicken and served it with warm, sliced beets w/vinaigrette. *chew* *tortured swallow* Ug. They still tasted like beets. Oh well, I'll try again in a decade or two... LOL Glad you enjoyed yours.

  13. Your beets are gorgeous!! And I'm glad they were delicious too! Your salad sounds like it was yummy. My beets pooped out waaaay long ago. They do not like the heat! And I'll bet the drag queen luncheon was hysterical and fun fun fun!

  14. Your salad sounds so delicious! The heat lately is draining my rain barrels, but I still have a bit left. I hope you get rain very soon.

  15. The thought of an app that allowed folks to slap another is a funny thought indeed! Don't worry, anyone who is going through extreme heat and no rain can so totally sympathize with you. I've heard Virginia has been getting rain but it's hit or miss. Same here. So tiring I tell you but fall and hopefully the rains will return soon enough. Those beets and goat cheese sound superb!

  16. hahaha last year we were dry, dry, dry, now we are wet, wet, wet. In fact, radio news just suspended schools and government offices in the capital region, so now i am going home. As people normally say, it's raining cats and dogs. The problem here is flooding after continuous rain for a few days. I love your butterfly photo above! The rain doesn't come your way as it is stranded here!

  17. I am sorry about your weather, and hope you get some rain soon! We have very expensive and very bad water, and we don't have rain from April till October, so I feel your pain about having to water...

That salad sounds great - maybe I will try it too!
