Feeling Sunny

Nadedza of Nadezda's Northern Garden recently honored me with the Sunshine Award. Thanks! Instead of selecting just a few fellow bloggers to pass it on to, I'd like to send it to everyone on my blogroll. You're fabulous! Once bestowed, the blogger is asked to reveal 7 facts about themselves. Here goes:

1. I'm a very open, easy going person who tends to say what I feel. This actually gets me into trouble sometimes!

'Purple Dome' asters

2. I grew up watching Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, MASH, and The Benny Hill Show with my dad which resulted in a fear of wearing red in a transporter, the knowledge that aliens carrying the book To Serve Man are planning to eat me, and a naughty sense of humor.

3. I love Irish music.

'Bluebird' asters

4. My favorite author is Geraldine Brooks. I've read People of the Book, March, and Year of Wonders.

5. One of my favorite places in nearby DC is the Reading Room in the Library of Congress. I have a researchers pass so I can go in and read. I think all libraries should be this beautiful!

The Reading Room at the Library of Congress

6. I think laughter, wine, and time spent with wonderful people is the best medicine.

7. Before becoming a teacher, I wanted to be a foreign correspondent/writer. But I didn't want to spend any time in war zones. I really just wanted to get paid to go to Tahiti and then write about it.

As long as that hammock is big enough for me and James Bond, it's all good.

  1. I enjoyed learning more about you! You certainly deserve the Sunshine Award! I would like that hammock in Tahiti, too. James Bond? I'm afraid my husband would want to join in to discuss his fancy gadgets and automobiles.

  2. Hi Tammy, congratulation for getting the Sunshine Blog Award! It is very nice and interesting to read a few personal things about you. The Reading Room of the Library of Congress blows my mind away. Maybe, just maybe if all libraries would be that beautiful people would prefer to read over watching TV?!

  3. The Reading Room is spectacular. I have seen the one at the British Museum, but I have never been our nation's capitol. Nor did I realize (or perhaps have forgotten) that you are a fellow teacher. Congratulations on the Sunshine Award; you are a spot of sunshine.

    1. Thanks! Being positive makes me feel good. I don't always succeed and have my miserable days, but most days I'm a pretty happy camper. I teach 6th grade science but also taught Language Arts for 10 years.

  4. Sincere congrats on the Sunshine Award....you deserve it, I do enjoy reading your blog so much, and it always makes me smile....definitely sunshine in my day...thanks.
You are lucky to have a Library of Congress pass...if I had known that, I would have certainly paid you a visit while I was in VA for my holiday...smile.
Oh my the Tahiti photo is captivating...so very peaceful...move over James!

  5. Congratulations for the award, Tammy. That library is awesome. I've visited Capitol year 2000. My husband had a meeting in Washington and I was as a tourist with him. We saw Capitol, Arlington, war museums and so on. I think Washington is a great city.

    1. Thanks! There is so much to do in DC that even if you lived there, you might not get a chance to do everything. I live outside of DC and discover new places to visit in the city every time I go in.

  6. Tammy, I do know your sense of humor deserves Sunshine Award! I love the Congress library. If I was sitting there I probably would have only considered the all-around.

  7. Forget the garden shots, I can't decide which photo I want to live in -- the reading room at the Library of Congress, or that hammock in Tahiti. Maybe both. You have wonderful dream spots, and a really nice garden to dream in too : )

    1. I want to be able to teleport myself between both spots. :o)

  8. Congratulations on your award! I am in love with that library, it is now on my "must see" list. I see nothing wrong with wanting to get paid to go to Tahiti and write about it :)

    1. I don't either! Tahiti is on my bucket list. But I may be too blissed out to write about it. :o)

  9. I think we should, as they say, do lunch the next time you're at the LOC. I'm just a few blocks away. S!

  10. I always enjoy these posts. It's nice to see what others do besides tend a wonderful garden. The reading room is amazing. I bet it echoes but then leave it to me to be all immature about it. I suppose you're supposed to be quiet in there, right? :)

    Live long and prosper.

    1. It doesn't echo too much but then I try to be quiet. The librarians will give you a serious stink eye if you make too much noise. The room is freezing! On my researchers pass I have a huge grin on my face, I'm so happy. :o)

  11. Congratulations on your well-deserved award, Tammy. And please give my regards to the Library, one of my favorite places when I lived nearby, on C Street NE. I miss it; thanks for (jogging) the memories. All best.

    1. Thanks! I love the tunnels underneath. They feel very spy-ish to me. :o) Just sitting in that room is amazing, especially in the age of electronics. It's like a temple to literature.

  12. You are sunshiney! Congrats! Unbelievable that I lived in the DC area for 19 years and never saw that room. I will make it a priority to visit next time I'm up there. There is something so powerful about libraries. Just knowing how much knowledge and inspiration is just dying to jump out of those books...And you know, my sweet girl was telling me that intelligence is the new sexy! LOL

  13. Always fun to learn a bit more about you Tammy. Now, wouldn't it be nice to have a job that involved lying in a hammock sipping something appropriately tropical; one hand holding a pen and paper, while the hand trails in the warm, turquoise-colored water? Gosh, I bet it pays well too. I haven't read anything by Geraldine Brooks. I like to read the Year of Wonders while sitting in a seat at the Library of Congress. What an amazing place!

    1. Her books are worth a look to see if she's an author you might like. I'm interested in any job that involves lying in a hammock!

  14. "Cardboardeaux"--now that is funny! I'll have to use that at my next party or tailgate event. Congrats on the award--you are definitely a ray of sunshine for all of us. Your sense of humor is always so refreshing. And you have a James Bond obsession, no? ;-)

  15. Congratulations on receiving the Sunshine Award! I'd find it difficult to actually read in that beautiful reading room and would probably be staring open-mouthed at the beautiful interior. Of course, this would cause me to drool on whatever text was before me and would probably get me banned from the place forever.

To Serve Man...some fava beans and an nice chianti?

    1. I'm sure Hannibal Lecter owns that book! The first I went to the LOC to read, I didn't get much reading done. I was just too awed that I was actually IN the Reading Room to accomplish much. :o)

  16. Fun to read about you. I love the Library of Congress' reading room. Our son in law's mother works at LOC, she sent us the photos of the hawk that was inside the reading room last year. (or was it the year before??) I thought Benny Hill was funny. :-)

    1. You have some interesting connections! I think the hawk was there 2 years ago. When I was a kid watching Benny Hill was an excuse to hang out with my dad. It was fun to watch a naughty foreign show and not get in trouble. But whenever I see a short bald guy I just want to pat him on the head repeatedly.
