Four months ago
Sun-loving native wine cups (callirhoe involucrata) thriving in bone dry partial shade.
it was too cold and snowy.
Clematis 'Baltyk'
Three weeks ago
Looking across part of the container garden into the rain garden.
it was too wet and rainy.
Two days ago
'Summertime Blues' campanula with a plant stake
to mark the location of the soaker hoses.
it was only 46 F at night
Native spigelia marylandica in the shade garden
so I closed the windows
These are supposed to attract hummingbirds.
to keep from freezing.
White annual euphorbia and seed grown cosmos
in a cheap bucket.
Today it is miserable hot
These will bloom all summer.
and my soaker hoses
'Purple Fantasy' persicaria in dry partial shade
will be running all day.
But that's life.
It's messy, unpredictable, and often ridiculous
but still absolutely beautiful.
And a floriferous life it is.
ReplyDeleteLet the blooming season begin!
DeleteIt's never just right is it but your fabulous plants have obviously not cottoned on to that fact. Wishing you continued happy gardening against the odds :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! The crazy weather always keeps me on my toes. :o)
DeleteYour plants must love you lots! Gorgeous garden! Your C. involucrata is beautiful--mine needs to take some lessons from yours.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to get rid of mine for years since it needs more sun and suffocates everything in its path but it's determined to grow so I've given up trying to stop it. We've made peace. It gets morning sun and bright afternoon shade in dry, well drained soil. When it gets too rowdy, I just pull off the stems to keep it in line.
DeleteJust beautiful - sometimes plants are more resilient than we are in the face of all this wacky weather :) And love the "cheap" bucket - I'd snap that up in a second if I saw it in a store.
ReplyDeleteThe wacky weather doesn't bother me. :o) I went looking for a pot but loved the bucket, instead.
DeleteYour garden seems to take the changes in stride, a sure sign that you should too. We've been socked in with June gloom every morning and, occasionally, like today, until late afternoon. But I love our marine layer because it keeps the heat at arm's length for yet another day. We actually got 0.02 inches of rain this morning - hey, it's something!
ReplyDeleteThe changes don't bother me. :o) They keep life interesting! Hooray for rain!
DeleteWhatever the weather you have lots to enjoy Tammy. I am very impressed with you own dahlia. Are you going to name it?
ReplyDeleteThe dahlias is from seed called 'Fireworks' and it's well named since it's already about 2 ft tall and is blooming before several of the others. I wish it was a unique hybrid, but it's one of the plants I started from seed this winter.
DeleteEverything looks lush and beautiful but 'Jude the Obscure' rose is absolutely gorgeous. Lovely color. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love it, too. :o) It's such a warm yellow.
DeleteThe garden looks beautiful despite the challenging weather. I wish I had a clematis that bloomed half as much as your 'Baltyk'.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Baltyk is a blooming machine! I have a few others that need to take notes. I think it just really likes the spot it's in.
DeleteYour garden is absolutely stunning! 'Baltyk' is phenomenal. We have to go back to DC and see your garden in June! Yesterday was 92 and working in the garden my shirt was soaked with sweat. Today is 67, and tomorrow is supposed to be 90 again. So it goes.
ReplyDeleteYou'll be back next year! I think the weather has been crazy everywhere. Crazy is the new normal.
DeleteTammy girl your plants are looking spectacular!! I love that blue clematis and the campanula too .. all of them are just gorgeous. The change in our weather is like night and day ... that is why we are so CRAZY as gardeners .. the extremes make us that way.. hum ? ... well some of us are leaning towards crazy more than others even without that tipping point ... just say'in ... LOL
ReplyDeleteJoy the nutter from the north ? haha
You are one of my favorite nutters. :o) It was hot, dry, and windy today. I'm ready for some rain!
DeleteOn the other side of the world our Winter weather has been changeable to say the least. Miserable and cold interchanged with windy and with warm and sunny. At least it given us gardeners something to talk about.
ReplyDeleteIt keeps us on our toes, that's for sure!
DeleteI enjoyed my double scoop...next time make it a triple!!
ReplyDeleteYour garden is beautiful and I know by the end of summer it will be packed to capacity with even more lovely blooms.
More flowers are coming! Exciting!
DeleteAnd in this case, beautifully illustrated with your photos. I have serious clematis envy :-)
ReplyDeleteIt grows well for me. It likes rich, moist soil so I've been careful where I've sited it.
DeleteWell, it's sure beautiful in your world! That rose is amazing~! I still have my down parka by the back door. I'm not convinced that the snow is over.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Snow in June?? That's crazy talk!
DeleteWhat a clematis 'Baltyk', Tammy! love it, nice color and would like to have it in my garden. My 4 clematis died this winter and 3 are growing. I hope they will bloom.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice week!
I hate it when plants die over the winter. :( But at least it's a good excuse to shop for new plants!
DeleteWoman, you continue to tease me with pictures of your stunning Clematis, while mine all seem to be succumbing to wilt or are being overwhelmed by other plants, or entirely comprise of a single stem and a few leaves. It's just not fair, I have clematis envy!
ReplyDeleteLOL!!! Here's the secret - rich, moistish, slightly acidic soil, AM sun, bright PM shade. I think that's it. Maybe they just prefer being called cle-MAT-tis instead of CLEM-uh-tis. ;o) I'll try to work my magic when I'm there!
DeleteAin't the garden and life grand? Messy, unpredictable, glorious! (Can you tell that yesterday was my last day with students for a while? I'll miss them but will certainly enjoy the break!)
ReplyDeleteI ran out on Friday as fast as I could, too! I was done, done, done! Life is good, indeed!
DeleteYes! That certainly is life! What a lovely garden you have, I especially like Jude and that fabulous blue clematis! Gorgeous.xxx
ReplyDeleteI think I just got lucky with Baltyk and put it in a spot it loves. It has major flower power! :o)
DeleteSorry you have had some weather challenges but your garden is just gorgeous and looks so lush and full of wonderful blooms. I am really envious of that amazing Clematis Baltyk. I will have to investigate that one as the flowers are stunning. Clematis can be a bit of a challenge here! Hope the weather normalizes for you...But your garden doesn't seem to mind one bit whatever the weather!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kate! Everything about the weather is a challenge these days. It's the new 'normal'. I bought Baltyk from Brushwood years ago but don't think they sell it anymore. I love the way the petal curve backwards.
DeleteSo true! It is insanely hot here. Even the wind is hot! The only time we can take the dogs to the park is at dusk. Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit cooler. I have some clearance tomatoes to plant.
ReplyDeleteOur weather has been all over the place. But hot wind is the worst. :(
