It's not having what you want
It's wanting what you've got
- Sheryl Crow, rock and roll goddess
Sometimes when you least expect it, something wonderful happens. Before the dry winds gusted on Saturday, sparking fires and sirens. and the clouds layered the sky on Sunday, the workweek ended with a canopy of sapphire blue and an afternoon as warm as spring.
I rushed home from work on Friday, sped through physical therapy, stood impatiently in line during my errands, and then ran outside into the garden and stopped. And just stood, breathing deeply, my face turned towards the sun.
I am tired of winter, exhausted of a palette of grey and brown, of layers of clothes and blankets. I need warmth and sunlight like a fish needs water. But in my fatigue, I have accepted the wisdom of winter, of rest and growth. The plants I tucked into the garden in October will soon shed their soil blankets, slipping small green leaves into the cool air, their roots fuller, branches longer. I slide into a patio chair, my shoulders drooping, and enjoy the warmth. If only for a moment.
The columbine are slowly wakening. These will boast purple flowers by spring.
What beautiful sky! At home, in state Washington, we have green grass and grey sky. We came to ski to Oregon. Everything is white, but the sky is blue. I think they are right saying that you can't have it all!
ReplyDeleteWe had a gorgeous Friday too. It was nice to feel the sun on my face. Yesterday, I got a little sunburn too! Your blue sky is lovely! I'm glad that you got to enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteYou express your love for the sun and outdoors beautifully. Anyone reading this can relate. So glad it is warming up now!
ReplyDeleteI always love when a weather system arrives in time for the weekend.
ReplyDeleteoh I'm so jealous, fresh new leaves to admire, blue sky, sun. We've had a couple sunny days recently with somewhat warm temperatures and the boost your body gets from those days is unbelievable. I'm so ready for spring!
ReplyDelete"Exhausted of a palette of grey and brown" - yup, for me, that sums it up right there!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautifully poetic serenade to the arrival of Spring.
ReplyDeleteEvery year I think I will not let winter get me down, and will find rewarding things to do and see even in latest February and March. And every year I get so discouraged by this time.... your little mini-essay on accepting the wisdom of winter rest has helped. For a few moments anyway : )
ReplyDeleteI, too, am a lover of blue sky and sunshine. I hope your dreary, cold winter ends soon! And you have those gorgeous cherry blossoms to look forward to every spring. Their arrival almost (almost) makes a long cold winter worth it!
ReplyDeleteYou have some great plants. I am your new follower. Come on by my new blog, I will be updating photos as the seasons progress.

We have had a similar, but brief respite from winter here last week. One glorious day of mild, sunny weather! Thank goodness for those little breaks from the cold and grey-gloom of winter.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Thanks so much for the Stylish Blogger Award. I am so very flattered that you thought to include me.
I saw that you had warm weather (I always check since my parents live up there)! That relaxed shoulder, soaking up the sun feeling is hard to beat! Spring is on the way!!
ReplyDeleteThe warmth was wonderful but all too brief and we have five inches of snow forecasted for tonight. At least the high winds that sparked so many fires on Saturday are gone!
ReplyDeleteFrom blue skies to 5 inches of snow? That's a huge swing of weather.
ReplyDeleteHope you are healing fast with the help of physical therapy.
Weather is crazy this time of the year.. A few days ago it felt like spring-now it's back to freezing! Hope the forecast of snow is wrong and sunshine and blue skies return to you soon!
ReplyDeleteThe air is cold, the ground is covered in snow and ice, but the sky is blue, blue, blue and I have a snow day to catch up on my grading! Hooray!
